MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Vikings have announced that legendary running back Adrian Peterson will be enshrined in the team’s Ring of Honor during the 2026 season. Peterson, a seven-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro, joins fellow running backs Chuck Foreman and Bill Brown as past honorees.

“From the moment we selected Adrian in the 2007 NFL Draft, he proved to be a transformational player for the Minnesota Vikings,” owner and president Mark Wilf said in a statement. “His historic 2012 MVP season will be rightfully remembered by fans, but Adrian’s consistent production over 10 seasons in Minnesota is what firmly established him as an all-time Viking and one of the greatest to ever play this game.”

The franchise surprised Peterson with the news last week. The 41-year-old had been invited to speak to the team’s rookies, but Vikings legend John Randle shared the announcement with him in a private moment.

The Vikings selected Peterson with the seventh overall pick in the 2007 draft. Over 10 seasons with the team, he rushed for 11,747 yards and 97 touchdowns, the most by any Vikings running back. In 2012, Peterson’s 2,097 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns earned him the NFL MVP award, making him the third Viking to achieve that honor.

“Adrian was an electric player who captivated fans when the ball was in his hands,” owner and chairman Zygi Wilf said. “His infectious energy and his appreciation for Vikings fans and the team’s role within the community made him even more memorable.”

Peterson’s tenure also included several off-field incidents and legal troubles. The NFL suspended him in 2014 after he was charged with felony child abuse; he later pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of reckless assault, paid a fine, and served probation. In April of last year, he was arrested in Minneapolis for driving while intoxicated. Last October, police arrested him for DWI and unlawfully carrying a weapon after he was found asleep in his SUV at a suburban Houston gas station. In both cases, he was released after posting bond.

Peterson becomes the 29th inductee into the Vikings’ Ring of Honor. He will become eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2027.
