Brandon Clarke, a forward for the Memphis Grizzlies, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 29. His agency, Priority Sports, confirmed the news, though the cause of death has not been disclosed.
Clarke, who played college basketball at Gonzaga, was selected 21st overall in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder. Two weeks later, he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies, where he spent his entire seven-year professional career.
After appearing in 64 games during the 2024–25 season, Clarke was limited to just two games in the current season due to calf and knee injuries.
In a statement, the Grizzlies said: “Brandon was an exceptional teammate and an even better person, whose impact on our organization and the Memphis community will never be forgotten.”
The NBA also released a statement: “As one of the longest-tenured Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with tremendous passion and courage. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family, friends, and the Grizzlies organization.”

Clarke’s sudden passing has shocked the basketball world, with fans and former teammates paying tribute on social media. Known for his high-flying dunks and defensive energy, Clarke was a key contributor off the bench for Memphis during their playoff runs. He averaged 10.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game over his career, shooting over 60% from the field.
The NBA community has rallied around the Grizzlies and Clarke’s family during this difficult time. More details are expected to emerge as the investigation into his death continues.
