Chelsea’s Champions League aspirations were officially dashed on Monday as they suffered a humiliating 3-1 home defeat to a much-changed Nottingham Forest side, extending their losing streak to six league matches.
Taiwo Awoniyi spearheaded Forest’s dominance, netting a sharp header inside two minutes and adding a second breakaway goal in the 52nd minute. Igor Jesus converted a penalty in the 15th minute to put Forest three goals ahead. Chelsea’s only response came deep into stoppage time, when Joao Pedro scored a spectacular overhead kick to make it 3-1 in the 93rd minute.
The error-ridden hosts never recovered from Awoniyi’s early opener, and their night turned worse just before halftime when Cole Palmer had a penalty saved. Young winger Jesse Shaun Derry was taken to hospital after a clash of heads with Forest’s Zach Abbott. Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and Forest substitute Morgan Gibbs-White both sustained head injuries in the second half but were able to walk off the pitch.
Despite ending Chelsea’s faint hope of a top-five finish and Champions League football next season, Forest themselves are not yet mathematically safe from relegation. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo opted to rest several first-choice players on the bench, keeping them fresh for Thursday’s Europa League semifinal second leg against Aston Villa.
